Trellis for climbing plants: examples of construction with your own hands

In order for garden and garden plants to please with the harvest, watering, fertilizers and conditions for their proper development are needed. Climbing plants, for example, need support: the stem will cling to it when it crawls up. For this purpose, it is most convenient to use a trellis - a special design that will help garden vines to grow without sagging, and will become an excellent decorative decoration for any site. Twisted with greenery, it forms a kind of openwork barrier: it creates a shadow where there is a need for it, hides outbuildings from the eyes. How a simple tapestry is constructed with your own hands, and what is needed for this, we will tell you.

The simplest design of branches

Spring is the time for pruning plants. Twigs, the diameter of which is about 1 cm, often go to waste, but you can build an uncomplicated, but cute trellis from them for various climbing plants. Peas, honeysuckle or hops are not overly burdensome plants for a light twig construction. For work, it is important to use flexible branches so that they do not break or split. To form the trellis, we need a pruner and wire.

Do not rush to throw out the branches remaining after spring pruning: they can turn out to be a simple but functional trellis for loaches, peas, hops

The number of branches used in the work depends on the scale of the upcoming construction. In any case, there cannot be less than two dozen of them. The branches need to be sorted by size so that later you do not waste time looking for the right rod. If there are shoots on the branches, remove them.

We stick the first branch into the ground to a depth of about 10-15 cm. Place the next branch 10 cm from the first, but at an angle of 60 degrees to it. We tie the rods together with a wire diagonally. We repeat this action as many times as necessary to get a trellis of the required size. Try to make the resulting rhombuses of the correct shape, then the whole structure will be neat and will last longer.

Everyone can make a trellis from twigs: this does not require special skills, just be patient and take two hours to work

The minimum costs have brought tangible results. See how spectacular and attractive loaches of different types look on this openwork design

Cut off the protruding ends of the branches. You should get a rectangle.

More complex and reliable structure

If we decide to make a versatile trellis that can withstand a heavy vine and last for several seasons, we will have to spend more time and use different materials.
Here's what to prepare:

  • planed wooden blocks measuring 30x3 mm;
  • round dense bar or a fragment of a shovel handle or rake;
  • self-tapping screws for woodwork;
  • antiseptic solution for impregnation;
  • dowels 8-10 mm in diameter;
  • moisture resistant glue;
  • chisel;
  • hacksaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • electric drill;
  • brush and paint.

After you have everything prepared, you can start doing the work.

For the manufacture of a rectangular trellis frame, it is necessary to use wooden blocks: two horizontal (1.8 m each) and two vertical (2.2 m each) bearing strips. The width of the finished lattice is 42 cm, so the crossbeams will be 35 cm long. We cut them in advance.

When making such structures, it is important not to rush and do everything carefully, then the result will be not only functional, but beautiful and durable

We mark the bars by making cuts on the tree so that you can insert the crossbeams. The distance between the cuts is 35 cm. With the help of a chisel, part of the wood in the cuts is removed. Moisture-resistant glue will help to fix the crossbars in wooden blocks. If this method of fixing does not seem to be reliable enough, then self-tapping screws can be used in the work. The vertical and horizontal parts of the grille are fastened with screws.

This is how a trellis looks like, which is already attached to the wall and braided by plants: its presence allows loaches to decorate the structure without destroying it

The structure is ready, it remains to fix it, for example, on the wall of the house. To drill holes for dowels in the wall of the house, we use a drill. A small distance must be kept between the wall and the trellis. To do this, cut cylinders with a length of 30 mm from a fragment of the cutting. In order for the grill to stand for a long time, it must be impregnated with an antiseptic and, if desired, covered with paint. We attach the dried structure to the wall.

Two types of designs for grapes

It is very important to build and install the grape trellis correctly. Its perennial branches must be given such a position that there is enough light and air for the development of the plant and the ripening of fruits. There is time to prepare the structure: it will only be needed in the third year. In the first two years, a temporary support is enough, the role of which is perfectly played by stakes.

Option # 1 - single-plane vertical trellis

A non-watered vineyard that grows along paths or walls is best placed on a vertical trellis. The structure will be based on pillars (diameter 8-10 cm, height -2.5-3.5 m) made of metal, concrete or wood. It is better to choose hard wood (beech, chestnut, oak or acacia). The lower end of the pillar (60-70 cm) can be burned, covered with resin, or kept in a 6% solution of copper sulfate for a week. This will extend their lifespan.

The material on how to make tracks in the country with your own hands will also be useful:

The single-plane vertical trellis allows the grapes to grow properly and receive enough sun, air and warmth for better juicing of the grapes

Pillars are placed along the planted plants at a distance of at least 3 m from each other. We mark the places of installation of the pillars and the first to dig in the extreme ones. We fix them with anchors or stops, which will allow the trellis to be taut. This is what it is:

  • Anchor. A large stone is tied with wire and attached to the upper end of the pillar, after which it is buried in the ground a meter from its base. With this fastening, the pillars are installed obliquely.
  • Emphasis. The vertical fastening of the extreme posts requires the installation of spacers in their lower part from the side of the row. The upper end of the spacer fits into a notch on the surface of the post, and under the lower end there is a stone buried half a meter into the ground.

Orient the trellis in the direction from south to north. The wire should be galvanized. They place it in three or four rows, fixing it on the extreme pillars overhaul, and on the middle ones with the help of staples. So it can be pulled up when sagging. The bottom row should be 30-40 cm from the ground, and each subsequent row should be half a meter from the previous one. They begin to pull the wire from the top row to the bottom.

Option # 2 - two-plane construction

If there is watering and the soil is fertile, then you can make a two-plane trellis for grapes with your own hands. This design is more complicated than the previous one, but it allows you to significantly increase the aerial part of the plant, providing it with air, heat and light. Such care guarantees a good harvest and excellent quality of the berries.

The two-plane design is used in conditions of fertile land and irrigation: this design helps to get a larger yield in the same size areas

The two-plane construction consists of two ordinary trellises, which are located at an angle to each other. The structure may have transverse beams, the upper of which is twice as long as the lower. The ends of these bars can be conveniently used to secure the wire to them.

Such trellises can be used both in the conditions of industrial production of grapes, and in the usual modest garden area.

Features of erecting a support for cucumbers

You don't have to think long about how to make a functional trellis for cucumbers: this structure does not have to be beautiful. Providing a bountiful harvest is its main purpose.

You can learn more about how to make a trellis for cucumbers from improvised means from the material:

On the garden bed, we install support posts at a distance of 2.5 m from each other. We nail a wooden crossbar 80 cm long to the top of each post. A spacer bar connects all the posts with the crossbars. It is located in the middle of the structure, its length is equal to the total length of the bed. Nails are driven into the crossbars 25 centimeters on either side of the spacer bar. A wire is pulled over them. The tapestry is ready.

Trellis for cucumbers are not made for beauty, but to obtain the maximum crop yield, which does not prevent them from being neat and decorating the garden in their own way

Consider this trellis scheme. It depicts the entire structure in great detail and clearly and gives a complete idea of how exactly it needs to be constructed correctly.

The twine is cut into pieces of 2.5 m. One end of it is fixed on the plant stem, and the other - on the wire. This arrangement of plants allows them to avoid diseases associated with waterlogging of leaves and stems. The space of the garden is streamlined, and the yield of the crop increases.

What can you make a trellis for climbing plants with your own hands?

It is difficult to find a garden without climbing plants. After all, they are very decorative and play an important role in decorating the landscape. But such plants require an obligatory support, which will not only support them, but also help to realize interesting design ideas. The optimal solution is a do-it-yourself trellis for climbing plants. It is not difficult to make it, just a little skill and a lot of desire.

Building a more complex trellis for climbing plants with your own hands

To build a more durable trellis that can withstand a sufficient number of climbing plants, you need to spend a little more time and building materials.

From materials and tools we need:

  • Planed wooden beams 30 * 3 mm
  • A fragment of a shovel handle or a round dense bar
  • Wood screws
  • Impregnating antiseptic solution
  • Dowels, with a diameter of 8-10 mm
  • Moisture-resistant glue for working with wood
  • Wood chisel
  • Hacksaw
  • Screwdriver or curly screwdriver
  • Electric drill
  • Paint and brush

Instructions for creating a trellis:

We create a trellis with our own hands

  1. We make a rectangular trellis frame. To do this, select two horizontal and two vertical strips, 1.8 and 2.2 meters long (you can use wooden beams).
  2. We cut the crossbars for the trellis, 35 cm long.The finished width of the lattice will be 42 cm.
  3. We mark with the help of a notch the selected bars in order to insert the crossbeams. The step between the cuts should be 35 cm
  4. Remove the cut parts of the beams with a chisel
  5. We connect the rungs with wooden blocks using moisture-resistant glue. If desired, the place of gluing can also be fixed with self-tapping screws.
  6. Using screws, we fasten the vertical and horizontal part of the grille
  7. We mark the wall for attaching the finished trellis structure to it
  8. With a drill we drill a hole in the wall for dowels
  9. We insert cylinders between the wall and the trellis (it is recommended to choose a sawn piece of a shovel handle, 30 mm in diameter)
  10. We saturate the grid with an antiseptic and paint if desired
  11. We attach the finished trellis to the wall

More complex plant trellis

This trellis is not made so long, the main thing is to prepare all the necessary structural elements in advance. It is suitable for any decorative climbing plant and even grapes.

Master class on making wooden trellis

The wood tapestry is very popular. Of course, you will have to take care of it, as the tree deteriorates under the influence of the sun, frost and rain. But with your own hands you can build the most incredible structures of any size. Below are step-by-step photos of making one of the common options.

The trellis divides the site into zones

The wooden trellis that you see in the photo is the basis of the overall structure with a pergola and an arch. The whole complex divides the territory of the courtyard into general and economic zones. The structure also supports climbing roses, grapes and clematis.
For the construction of the trellis, I used the following materials:
-bar section 60X40mm
- edged board with a section of 20x120mm
-rails with a section of 20x40mm
- self-tapping screws 4,2X76mm (black, rare step)
- self-tapping screws 3X35mm (galvanized)
- impregnation for wood "Pinotex"
- yacht varnish
- galvanized box with section 60X60mm
- cement and sand.

Trellis section sketch

The structure has the following dimensions (one section): total height from the ground 1.9 m, width 1.8 m, height of the lower beam from the ground 0.3 m. The step between the slats is 0.2m. All parts, including the strips, were coated with impregnation and two layers of varnish before assembly. Four seasons of the building's life have shown that it has to be varnished every two years. Sometimes it is necessary to clean the darkened wood with a sandpaper and re-coat it with Pinotex before varnishing. Then the whole structure always looks like new.

It looks like a support in the ground

To mount the trellis supports, I dug holes 0.4 m deep. On the ends of the beams, which will be in the concrete, I put on pieces of galvanized profile 60X60mm (I bought one fence post) and fixed it with self-tapping screws. Since the timber is thinner, it was necessary to eliminate the gap with a strip of plywood 10 mm thick. It is easier to use special galvanized thrust bearings, but it was not possible to acquire them quickly.
I set the supports from a bar in height, placing stones at the bottom of the hole, fastened them with crossbars and temporary supports, and then concreted them.

Trellis frame installed

After solidification of the solution, I divided the sections in half with additional beams for strengthening and dividing into lighter visual forms. All connections were made with self-tapping screws. In order not to charge the screwdriver too often, the bar closest to the screw was pre-drilled with a diameter of 4 mm. The plot has a slope, so the trellis is equipped with a "ladder".
The next step was to install the inclined slats of the first layer using self-tapping screws. To simplify the work, I made two calibers 200 mm in size from the cuttings of the slats. Gauges were installed at the top and bottom to ensure a constant angle of inclination of the grating.

The slats were attached on this side

The slats are long and thin, so they can be curved. This must be taken into account when attaching the second layer of rails directed in the other direction, and to correct the curvatures when tightening the screws. The slats of the second layer were first fastened at the top and bottom, and then in the middle, with the correction specified above.
I had enough diligence to treat with impregnation all the ends of the parts before their installation. But the joints of the parts do not "lose face" over time, and the wood does not deteriorate.

Clematis masters the trellis

Most of the slats were cut to size and machined prior to installation. I used a template to cut the slats at the same angle. It is more convenient to do this with a miter box. The result is a rather rigid structure. In any case, roses, clematis and grapes like it.

Metal tray to protect the trellis

To protect the structure from rain and sun, I installed a 20x120mm board on top.However, she demanded too frequent care: she needed to be cleaned, painted. For this reason, I ordered a brown sheet metal tray and covered the boards on top.

The metal tray did not spoil the appearance

The solution turned out to be very successful. The appearance has not suffered, but my worries have diminished.
